Would you make the same decisions in a foreign language as you would in your native tongue?

Presidents Day - ALOHA Mind Math

Presidents Day Presidents Day is a celebration of both George Washingtons and Abraham Lincolns Birthdays. The Presidents are sorts of gifts that keeps on giving. Though they were born more than 100s of years ago, we all still get the day off around their birthday. With schools closed and hopefully offices, as well, all of us suddenly have a bonus day to do fun stuff with the kids. Fun for kids today is most probably eating out and having a game day with their friends, how many of us have actually put in some thought to know if our kids would know the reason behind having a holiday and celebrating it in true spirits? All said and done, I always wonder what one could do to keep the spirit of the holiday (President’s day) alive and still have fun. Do you face a similar problem? I have come up with a list of activities which will allow you to educate your kid about the reason for getting a holiday, celebrating the holiday and letting them have a high quotient of fun as well. Here are few ideas that can help you get started on this day: Teach with fun: Ist always easy to remember short stories and especially the fun ones too. Why I Teach Art...

Why I Teach Art... “Diamonds are created under pressure.”One of my teachers told me this on a day when I was having a particularly hard time finishing an art project at school. I asked her why she said it, and she explained that even in the most difficult moments in our lives, we have the ability to generate sparkling brilliance….like a diamond. A new-found sense of possibility came into my spirit and I was able to create a beautiful sculpture out of the clay that I thought would forever remain a blob on the table!Children have an amazing ability to discover deep feelings and inspiration through creating art. Art allows us all to capture our imaginations and then interpret what we see in our minds eye through clay, paint, photography, tissue paper, mosaics or whatever we can get our hands on and heads around.I believe in teaching Art as if it is not simply the facility of learning how to manipulate a material or a achieving a skill or technique. I teach art as if it is a life lesson, a history le sson and journey to the core of the human soul.Art is a reflection of the human experience, therefore I teach the social and cultural context of an art-form first. Why was this particular art-form important? How did it function within a culture? History? What effect did it have on people? Then we go about learning materials, texture, technique and exploring the creative process….always asking questions and nurturing critical thinking skills along the way. Then we start laying out the piece, using math and geometry to plan how we will display or install the piece when it is finished….discussing what we have learned and what the final piece means to us individually and as a group.I teach children that there is a beginning, middle and end to the process of creating. I teach them to think about how it will be presented, who will the audience be that receives it, and how might people interpret the piece when they see it?In that essence, I tell my students that there are no mistakes in Art, because Art is honest communication. Just like our feelings, every artistic moment is a chance to express what we feel, how strongly we feel, and make a choice about how we will interpret the ways we feel.Being able to take children on such a personal journey is both a great responsibility and tremendous joy. The Arts have the abilty to open our minds, heal our hearts and make the World a more interesting place. That is why I teach ART……

Windows 8 3 Reasons Why You Shouldnt Upgrade

Windows 8 3 Reasons Why You Shouldn't Upgrade Photo from microsoft.com Windows 8 didnt look very new to me â€" and I realized Id been seeing this same interface since the arrival of the Windows Phone. Microsoft is clearly cross-promoting their tablet, phone, Xbox and computer brand.  The new interface, or rather the old interface formerly known as Metro, looks and feels like a touchscreen. Though Im sure Windows 8 works like a dream on convertible Tablet PCs, I still rely on my mousepad and wireless mouse, and the experience is truly sub-par. Windows 8  is made with fingers in mind, not mice. While the Windows 8 interface is very pretty, it is at the price of functionality. 2. A counter-intuitive learning curve For months, I thought that Windows 8 was essentially a faster Windows 7, just with a new start menu. How wrong I was. The system relies on mouse gestures such as moving to the corners to change windows, return to Start, use Charms and more to really work. The system is completely counter-intuitive, especially because it relies on a mobile-based interface. I spent most of the first day using Windows 8 just moving my mouse around and trying to learn all the new quirks. At first, I only had a few questions: Wheres the Control Panel, how do I scroll, etc. Gradually, more and more questions popped up: How do I close this app? How do I delete this tile from Start? Where are the rest of my programs? To top it all off, it took me an agonizing five minutes to figure out how to just shut down the computer. The first day using a new computer should be exciting and uplifting, not frustrating to the point that I want to tear out my hair. Ironically, for a system that simplifies the start menu, Windows 8 simply expects too much from its users. 3. Modern vs. Desktop Apps Windows 8 features new modern apps as its main attraction: users can click tiles on the Start menu that lead to clean, appealing full-screen PC-version mobile-style apps. The desktop is familiar to Windows 7 users, just missing the beloved Start button. Apps that dont have modern counterparts yet simply run on the Desktop. Best of both worlds right? Wrong. Desktop apps dont run in the modern, full-screen experience and vice versa. Switching from a modern app to the Desktop is easy enough, but switching from Desktop to a modern app or even from a modern app to another modern app requires waiting for the loading screen each time. This process wastes time and can become utterly infuriating.  Users now have to remember which apps are running on Desktop and which require the modern interface. Even as an avid Windows lover, Windows 8 has earned two double facepalms from me. While the learning curve might be slightly less steep on a tablet PC, the rest of us traditional PC users are left with the considerably shorter end of the stick. With the upgrade to Windows 8 Pro starting at a discounted $40, I would cautiously urge you to reconsider putting that moolah towards something more useful. Thoughts? Love Windows? Hate it?
